About Piatnik Claude Monet Cards – Single Deck – Masterpieces
This set of artsy playing cards made by the Austrian game publisher and manufacturer of board games, playing cards and puzzles company Piatnik, established in 1824; features some of the masterworks by the French Impressionist artist Claude Monet. During the Impressionist Show in 1874, a hostile critic applied the term Impressionism in response to Monet’s work “Impression: Sunrise” . Although the critic intended the label to be derogatory, by the third Impressionist show in 1878, the artists had embraced it and were calling themselves Impressionists. Artists and critics had used the term Impressionism before, but only in relation to sketches. In sharp contrast with traditional studio artists, Monet painted outdoors en plein air allowing him to focus on the roles light and color play in capturing an instantaneous representation of atmosphere and climate.
