This porcelain plate is based on “King Alphonso” artwork by New-York-born artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1983).
The original painting is an acrylic and charcoal on paper created for Basquiat’s series “The Daros Suite”. The artwork gathers many of the most familiar symbols generally found in Basquiat’s masterpieces:
- the famous three-pointed crown,
- an enigmatic text,
- the predominance of King Alphonso‘s head and name over the other elements in the frame.
Much of the anatomical imagery and diagram-like composition of the artist paintings, drawings, and prints are derived from Basquiat’s childhood. At that time, the young boy had a huge interest in the medical textbook Gray’s Anatomy.
This high-end small plate features one of the most revolutionary paintings of the eclectic New Yorker artist of the 1980s. The plate comes protected in a beautiful blue gift box.
