About Piet Mondrian
Piet Mondrian is regarded as one of the most important and influential artist of the 20th Century. He founded the De Stijl art movement with Theo von Deosburg. When moving to Paris, he removed an ‘a’ of his last name to mark the movement from Netherlands into a new phase. Being influenced in by Picasso and Braque, he morphed into a new style he created called Neo-Plasticism which is characterized by the use of the three primary colors red, blue and yellow. The horizontal lines in his work represent femininity and earthly qualities whilst the vertical lines are masculinity and spirituality. He never used a ruler to paint his lines and he would sometimes take months to paint.
