Van Gogh like many artists in the history of art used himself as a model producing over 43 self-portraits during his lifetime. Like the old masters, van Gogh managed to paint himself critically, often revealing important psychological moments throughout the artist’s life. Such is the case of van Gogh’s Self-Portrait made in 1889 while interned at an Asylum in Saint-Remy. The arabesque figures in the background along with the bright aquamarine color are arguably indicative of the van Gogh’s mental state while interned at the psychiatric facility. Van Gogh’s static posture immediately contrasts with the dynamic absinthe-like color of the arabesque background. In this head-and-shoulders view, the artist is wearing a suit and not the pea jacket he usually worked in. Attention is focused on the face. His features are hard and emaciated, his green-rimmed eyes seem intransigent and anxious.

About Vincent van Gogh
An extremely influential artist, Vincent van Gogh’s influence is evidenced throughout the history of art, impacting artists from artistic movements such as Abstract Expressionism, and Neo-Expressionism, among others. Van Gogh’s important artistic influence is indebted to his use of expressive, divisionist brushwork and vibrant colors in his palette. Scholars observed from his divisionist brushstrokes the strong influence from Pointillists such as Georges Seurat, but instead of using dots Van Gogh notoriously employed dashes. From the influence of French Impressionists artist, Van Gogh also adopted the use of strong complementary colors, such as the prevalence in use of oranges and blues evident in this self-portrait. Even though Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime to his brother Theo, today Van Gogh’s works are among the best selling artworks in the art market. Van Gogh is known for producing one of the world’s most immediately recognizable works “Starry Night” (1889) found at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
