About Van Gogh Pillow Case - Musart on Pillows - Portrait of Joseph Roulin (1889)

This Van Gogh Pillow Case is part of our original collection, Musart on Pillows. This Van Gogh Pillow is made out of Jacquard Weave Fabric. Jacquard weaving consists of the interweaving of two kinds of yarn: warp threads (10,500 threads in 100% cotton) and weft threads (cotton, wool, linen). This extremely precise technique makes it possible to interweave around 80 threads / cm². This technique results in obtaining a point of great finesse, it also allows to use a multitude of colors. This particular pillow represent Van Gogh's close friend Joseph Roulin when he was staying at southern French town Arles during 1888-1889. In 1888, Vincent van Gogh moved to Arles, in hope of exploring more artistic sensation in the countryside. But after he moved here he found himself lonely and isolated. Joseph Roulin worked as the postmaster at the station in Arles. Van Gogh went there frequently to send paintings to his brother Theo in the Netherlands and they became close friends. The friendship with Joseph Roulin and his family offered Van Gogh comfort and companionship. Roulin tended to van Gogh in the aftermath of psychotic episode in which Van Gogh menaced Gauguin and then sliced off a part of his own ear. Roulin continued seeing Van Gogh when he committed to the psychiatric hospital in Arles, and writing to Van Gogh's family to reassure them of his health, and provide constant solace to the recovering artist. Van Gogh

Van Gogh was a master painter who strongly influenced the abstract and Neo-expressionist who came after him. Originating from the Netherlands, he discovered Impressionist art while living in Paris and started to use the color and light. His work is well known for its beauty, emotion, and color, as well as its interesting viewpoints of mundane objects. Despite being extremely poor and generally unknown throughout his lifetime, Van Gogh is now one of the greatest Dutch painters.  He lived a life with emotional tension and madness, and he created his finest piece, Starry Night, inside an institution. Although the specter of mental illness haunted him throughout his adult life and created a habit of inflicting self-harm (such as the infamous severed ear), his work remained a testament to his genius. Van Gogh died at the age of only 37, due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His brother Theo would go on to distribute his work and cultivate his popularity.
