About the painting
The Starry Night is the best-known oil on canvas painted by the Dutch post-impressionist Vincent van Gogh. He painted it one year before he died when staying at the asylum in St. Remy de Provence, France. The painting illustrates the night just before sunrise as Van Gogh could see it from the window of his asylum room. Not only the stars and sky appear on this masterpiece but also he depicted a Provencal village. Starry Night is regarded as among Van Gogh “finest works, and one of the most recognized monuments in the art history of Western culture. It remains in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941.
