In the convalescence house of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a former monastery from the 12th century, Van Gogh painted the irises that lined the path leading to the cloisters. This painting was, as for many artists of this period, influenced by Japanese paintings ukiyo-e (floating world).
Vincent van Gogh took up this theme of the irises again, not in the ground like those of the garden of Saint-Rémy, but in very simple vases where deep blue flowers bloom. Marine blues, violets, each iris bloom is treated individually and stands out on blue-green leaves.
