About RMN-Grand Palais – Joan Miro Tote Bag – Woman, Bird, Star (1966-73)
This beautiful Joan Miró Tote Bag by Réunion des Musées Nationaux-Grand Palais is made in 100% cotton, and it features the notorious work by the Spanish Surrealist artist, Joan Miró. Miró was a Spanish painter that combined abstract art with Surrealist fantasy to create his lithographs, murals, tapestries, and sculptures. His mature style evolved from the tension between his fanciful, poetic impulse and his vision of the harshness of modern life. In spite of his fame, Miró, an introvert, continued to devote himself exclusively to looking and creating. Miró’s Femme, Oiseau, étoile (1966-1973) includes evident references to figurative art that appear in the figured outlined against the white background, in contrast to the flat planes of color, which act as an independent and non-mimetic composition. Miró’s work is focused on three essential figures recurrent in Miró’s symbolism. The symbolism of the woman is referred to as the link between human beings and their roots to their land along with the birth and the star, that represents a poetic and spiritual attraction, displayed on either side of the central figure. On this bright background, the great female figure emerges, with broad shapes similar to Neolithic sculptures and constructed as a giant collage of flat colors. The contrast between the linear signs of the star, hair, and headdress compared to the full, colorful and flat shapes of the woman and the bird perched on her, establishing a hybrid personage, which characterize this great emblematic composition.
