About the CowParade San Antonio

CowParade began in Zurich, Switzerland in 1998, and both the 2000 CowParade in New York City and the 1999 CowParade in Chicago were widely touted as the most successful public art programs in the cities’ history. Over 44 million people viewed the New York event, and the Chicago event generated nearly $500 million in economic impact.

CowParade is an international public art exhibit that travels to many world cities. San Antonio served as an urban pasture to the herds of CowParade cows displayed on the streets during Summer 2003. CowParade San Antonio was a wildly successful public art exhibition designed to celebrate the spirit of San Antonio’s cultural heritage and the fight against cancer. From Alamo Plaza to the Mission Trails, this event inspired tourists and San Antonio residents alike to explore San Antonio anew. More than 100 brightly colored life-size heifers adorned the city. In San Antonio, the cows were attached to a 500-pound base so as not to “walk away.” Then, the cows were sold not only at a live but also an online auction. Finally, all the benefits went to the American Cancer Society and the City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs charities.

About the cow shapes
