About Dick Bruna
Born in the Netherlands city of Utrecht, Dick Bruna‘s father was a publisher at the family-owned company A.W. Bruna & Zoon, founded by his grandfather. Despite his father’s efforts to convince Dick Bruna to become a publisher, in 1951 he joined A.W. Bruna & Zoon as a designer for the company after his enrollment at the Rijksakademie for fine arts in Amsterdam. Dick Bruna’s interest in drawing was also fueled during World War II, when in 1943 the family was seeking refuge from the war and as used drawing as a way of maintaining himself occupied. It is also during this time, that Dick Bruna’s interest in art was also awakened after witnessing the works of Henri Matisse and Fernand Léger. Dick Bruna’s iconic “Miffy” little bunny girl was born in 1955 when the artist would tell bedtime stories to his son based upon a little white bunny found in the garden. After creating multiple sketches of the bunny, Dick Bruna decided the little bunny looked better with a dress than a pair of pants, and thus the iconic little bunny girl “Miffy” was born, the inspiration for this beautiful miffy magnets.
