About Gustav Klimt
The painting “Judith and the Head of Holofernes or Judith I”(1909) represents the biblical theme of Judith holding the head of Holofernes, this violent narrative has been dramatically rendered by artists prior to Klimt such as Caravaggio, Gentileschi and Bigot. Contrary to prior depictions of Judith, Klimt emphasizes not the violent act of beheading Holofernes, who is casted to the margin of the image, but rather on her sensuality and thus directly relating Judith to the biblical character Salome, and the “Femme Fatale” theme.
