About the Bearers of Secrets trilogy
Ottmar Hörl presented his Bearers of Secrets Gnomes at the Art Fair Art Karlsruhe in 2006, Germany. He designed the dwarves in three poses: covering their eyes, ears, and mouth, especially for the art fair. You can now buy gnomes from this trilogy that relate to the maxim the Three wise monkeys”. In the Western World, the phrase is often used to refer to those who deal with impropriety by turning a blind eye.
Hörl’s comparative political idea represents an art which triggers discussion and doesn’t try to hide in the protected atmosphere of a museum. At that time, Hörl’s squared installment of 1,200 gnomes in horizontal rows and vertical columns fomented some reactions.
Ottmar Hörl is a German visual artist who was born in Nauheim in 1950. He became famous with his 3d installations in public places made up with hundreds of identical sculptures. Today, his work is known for its whimsicality and uniqueness, but also tends to spark political controversy, particularly with his gnomes. Ottmar Hörl is not only renowned as an artist but also as an art teacher and writer. He put several exhibits up in art galleries and museums and also had some articles about him and his art.
