After the devastating hurricane Katrina left it’s mark on New Orleans, Banksy visited the city in 2008 to leave behind his particular brand of social and political commentary on Hurricane Katrina and its effects on New Orleans culture. He was coming to do battle with the Gray Ghost. The Gray Ghost aka Fred Radtke is an anti-graffiti artist, he made it his mission to erase every bit of graffiti in the city long before Banksy’s arrival, sweeping down the street with his gray paint roller in hand . Two years later, only a single Banksy work has escaped the gray paint roller, and only because it’s behind plexiglass. The Gray Ghost himself became the subject of some of Banksy’s New Orleans work, depicted as a bent figure blotting out color on the city’s walls. The anonymous artist Banksy gives Street Art a major source of artistic vitality by making provocative pieces for over twenty years.
Beginning graffiti art in 1990, the artist continues to make countless art pieces around his hometown of Bristol, UK. The rise of street art in the collective consciousness of the art community has been concurrent with the rise of fame of themselves. Consequently, they are often seen as a contributing force of the movement.
Still creating brilliant works to this day, Banksy has charmed millions worldwide with its ability to blend surrealist elements. Most importantly, his satirical political commentary always points towards an aspect of society that needs improvement. The artist continuously works to this day and shows absolutely no signs of stopping – nor of revealing the artist’s identity.
