About Frank Lloyd Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright was the leader of the Prairie School movement and his creative period spanned more than seventy years. Already well known during his life, he was recognized as “the greatest American architect of all time” by the American Institute of Architects in 1991, and he remains an influential figure to this day. Frank Lloyd Wright studied engineering at the University of Wisconsin, where he read the work of John Ruskin and was particularly drawn to rational, structural interpretation in the writings of Eugene-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc. At the age of twenty-two, Wright designed his own house in Oak Park, Illinois, a quiet community thirty minutes from downtown Chicago. Early houses designed by Wright reflect the influence of English architects Phillip Webb and Richard Norman Shaw in the open and free-flowing floor plans in his designs. At the same time, Wright also used a cruciform plan, also present in his monumental design projects.
